Bad Mommy Moment
Warning: The following is a true story, a reenactment of an actual conversation. It contains conduct unbecoming of a good mommy.
Brandon to his Cousin: “Your mommy embarrasses you just like my mommy embarrasses me.”
Me to Brandon: “What are you talking about? I don’t embarrass you!”
Brandon to Me: “Oh yes you do. Remember, at your 30th birthday party when you said I was the worst finder ever?”
Me to Brandon: “What!”
Brandon to Me: “Yes, when Aunt Charmaine asked me to find something and you said ‘Don’t ask Brandon, he’s the worst finder ever.”
Me to Brandon: Silence.
Almost 2 months later my poor baby has been holding these feelings in. I hurt him. How sad. This was truly a bad mommy moment.
So, two whole days later. I called Brandon into my room and apologized to him. Yes - it took me two days to get around to saying I was sorry. At first I thought - well I wasn’t lying, he is the worst finder ever.
Then I thought about how I felt as a kid when my parents said something unflattering about me. And then I called my baby in and told him I was sorry I hurt his feelings and that I would help him to become a better finder.
Now, that that bad mommy moment is behind me, it’s time to move on to the next one…
